Helping Creators BUILD and GROW their businesses, online.

getting started with convertkit

October is a big month when it comes to Email Marketing, and for good reason – it’s a massive part of online business and ConvertKit is there to help.

Stay tuned for more information about two, extremely valuable webinars later this month that ConvertKit will be hosting.

I started earlier this year with a blog post describing the overall benefits of email marketing and building an email list, (A Case for Email Marketing) and then shared the parts of the most important email you will ever send: the welcome email. (Anatomy of the Perfect Welcome Email)

Today, I want to give a quick overview of how to signup and start using ConvertKit as your one-stop-shop Email Service Provider. Below is my step-by-step guide to get you started with using ConvertKit. You can be up and running within an afternoon. Let’s go!

Getting Signed Up

For my Email Service Provider (ESP), I use ConvertKit for all my email-related business needs. It allows me to easily gather reader’s emails, segment them into various groups, and provide them with value in a unique and personalized way. This service is on the leading edge of Email Marketing offering incredibly powerful tools for automation and relationship development with your audience.

Email marketing has an average ROI of 3,800 percent. For every dollar invested, the average return is $38.

Quick Start Guide

In this section we will break the guide into five key functions in ConvertKit, and a walkthrough of each one! The functions include:

  1. Importing Subscribers into the ConvertKit system
  2. Creating a landing page and attaching a freebie
  3. Creating an email signup form and put it on your website
  4. Creating an automated sequence for onboarding and sales
  5. Using tags to segment your email list and increase open rates

#1 – Importing Subscribers into ConvertKit (even from another Email Service Provider)

ConvertKit makes it easy to import subscribers you may have from another Email Service Provider (like AWeber, MailChimp, MailerLite, etc.) with a built-in API integration with certain ESPs.

If you don’t have an ESP that you currently use and only a spreadsheet of names and emails, that will work too! Their importing system can easily use Comma Separated Value type files (.csv) to automatically and quickly input your whole list!

What would previously take hours to do by hand can be done in simply minutes.

Below is a concise video guide of how to import existing members of your email list into the ConvertKit system. And remember, as a customer of ConvertKit you can always, at any time and about anything email marketing related, reach out to their excellent support.

#2 – Creating a Landing Page and Attaching a Freebie or Content Upgrade

In this section, you will see how to create a landing page to gather reader emails. This is a page where you can direct followers and can include a freebie – like a valuable PDF, discount code, eBook, etc.

Landing Pages are unique in that they do not require you to have a website to start gathering emails. These pages are hosted by ConvertKit with your own unique URL (web address).

The video below will walk you through the process of designing and deploying your very own landing page.

#3 – Creating an Email Signup form and putting it on your website

Like Section #2, here you will be designing a email signup, but one that you can put on your website (in your blog posts, in the sidebar, or as a pop-up). These are great to be able to create what are called “content upgrades” – where you encourage readers to give their email in exchange for bonus content related to the topic of the blog post.

The video below will walk you through the process. Keep in mind if you need any assistance for design or install reach out to their support!

#4 – Creating an Automated Sequence for Onboarding and Sales

In this section, we will see how to automate key processes in email marketing. This way you can send personal, valuable, and relatable emails to your list – automatically!

Two really important automations include your welcome sequence whenever someone signs up, and the sales sequence whenever you are trying to sell (or have already sold) a product or service.

This is a slightly more advanced topic and function but can be used in powerful ways to enhance your online business functionality.

#5 – Using Tags to Segment your List and Increase Value

In this last section, you will see the basics of how to divide up your email list into different categories so that you can better serve each segment. This also allows you to track and test the overall engagement of your audience using Link Triggers.

This is another more advanced topic but can elevate the unique value you can offer to your readers and customers by sending them emails only to those who it will really value and serve.

I know this was a lot to take in! But this should get you started in your Email Marketing efforts. If you need any assistance, feel free to reach out to me at – joseph@buildyourstampinsite.com
